Happy Spring!

I love the spring time! Mother nature clears off the snow to welcome the blooming flowers and budding trees. All of the hibernating animals are waking up and making their presence known.

Its a great time of year! When the calender says its the first day of spring, I welcome it with open arms. It means warmer weather is coming. I can start to think about packing away the heavy winter coat and wearing those comfy fleece jackets in the cool mornings.

It means my car won't be covered is salt residue from the roads. I can drive around with the windows open to get some fresh air while I'm moving around town.

I can take a walk around the block without worrying about slipping on ice or snow. I can enjoy the sounds and smells of spring while I take my leisurely jaunt around the block.

Also, its closer to the ice cream shack at the end of our street opening up too. Bonus!!

Hey, did I mention I love this time of year!?!?

Grow Old With You

Today is our 3rd wedding anniversary! Wow! Happy Anniversary Honey!

Jeff & I on our Honeymoon in Oahu Hawaii

This song was playing as we cut the cake at our reception. Its from the movie "The Wedding Singer" sung by Adam Sandler (its towards the end when Robbie goes after Julia on the airplane and sings the song to win her love) and we just think its the cutest song. It just fits with our humor so well and its so sweet!

Grow Old With You
I wanna make you smile whenever you're sad
Carry you around when your arthritis is bad
All I wanna do is grow old with you
I'll get your medicine when your tummy aches
Build you a fire if the furnace breaks
Oh it could be so nice, growing old with you
I'll miss you
Kiss you
Give you my coat when you are cold
Need you
Feed you
Even let ya hold the remote control
So let me do the dishes in our kitchen sink
Put you to bed if you've had too much to drink
I could be the man who grows old with you
I wanna grow old with you

Jeff's Favorite Thing in the Fall

Jeff has a list of favorite things that keep him going year round. Of course I'm at that top of that list, then his video games, his motorcycle, his beer (yuck) and sports. The thing that he likes the most in the fall is his apple crisp! The days leading up to apple picking, I get the question over and over again "Are you going to make me something?". Then on apple picking day, there is no more beating around the bush, I get the direct question "Are you going to make me apple crisp?".

Now, for the last several years I've always either made him an apple pie or apple crisp. I've never skipped a year, but they way he asks in his desperate, I never make him anything voice, he just wants to make sure. I just shake my head and say "Um, yeah!". Its just not for him you know, but he likes to think so!

But, I'd like to share with you the easy recipe I found for Apple Crisp. I found it on myrecipes.com and modified is just slightly, but its simple and yummy.

Easy Apple Crisp

Ingredients:

6 apples - peeled, cored & sliced
1 cup water
1 (18.25 ounce) package white cake mix
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup butter, melted

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
2. Arrange apples in an even layer in bottom of baking dish (I usually do several layers since I use the largest apples I can find in my bag). Pour water over apples.
3. In a medium bowl, mix together cake mix, brown sugar and cinnamon. Stir in melted butter or margarine until ingredients are thoroughly blended; mixture will be crumbly (I usually sprinkle a layer of cinnamon on top of the apples before I put the crumbly mix on top). Sprinkle mixture over apples.
4. Bake in preheated over for 50-55 minutes.

I wanted to show a picture of the yummy, gooey goodness before it was consumed, but I was lucky enough to get a picture of the pan right out of the oven.

I'm thinking of serving this as a Christmas dessert this year instead of apple pie. Jeff doesn't seem to mind!

Pick the perfect one!

Today, we went apple picking! It was myself, Jeff, my SIL, my BIL, my FIL and Ally. This was the first time in years we didn't have Zack around. But don't worry, I'm going to send him some apples and pictures so he's not left out.

We go to a local farm who has been opening their doors for many seasons so people can pick apples (and other fruit when its different seasons). So, at the local farm you get your 1/2 bushel bag, climb on a tractor, the tractor brings you to the apple picking trees, you pick the apples until your bag is full, then you return to the tractor pick-up area.

I've never picked apples anywhere else, so I'm not sure how the trees look somewhere else, but pictured above is the trees at the place we go. I think its pretty neat since its not your traditional tree and the low branches allow kids easy access to the apples (as long as they aren't picked already).

The weather was perfect too. It was a brisk fall day, with those marshmallow clouds, but the sun shined bright and warm. The breeze would come along once you got a little toasty standing in the sunshine. What a wonderful day it was!

Ally is helped Uncle Jeff with the high apples. It was so cute too. He would lift her up so she could reach a bundle of apples, maybe 5-6 apples on a branch all bunched together. She would pull one off the branch and the rest of the bundle would fall to the ground. Hey, she didn't mind since she had the one in her hand that she picked herself with a big smile on her face. She also helped her father reach those high, big juicy apples.

Its hard to resist when you are around all those apples, not to eat one while you fill up your bag. At least you can try them out before hand, right? We discovered that the big, dark red ones were juicer and sweeter then the small apples. Good to know!

Ally was helping fill up too bags, reach high for the big apples and search for low branches with apples that she worked up an appetite. Or it could be that she saw everyone else eating the apples. Either way, she had a blast picking and eating the apples.

Me, my SIL Sarah, my FIL, my BIL Johm, Ally hugging him and Jeff
I can't wait until next year! I hope we will have Zack around too. Him and I started this tradition 5 years ago and it just feels weird without him around. But until then, its off to make apple crisp and munch on my yummy apples.

Discounted Vera Bradley

I love Vera Bradley bags and accessories. I don't know why, but I just do. When ever I see a store that has a piece on display, it sucks me right in. I can't afford the products, but it doesn't cost anything to look right!

I've only purchased one thing at full price, but it was a gift to myself. Its a small duffel bag I use ALL the time for travel. It fits perfectly under an airline seat in the under seat compartment and fits great between my vans front seats. So, I use it to carry all kinds of stuff while on the road.

As for all the other pieces I own, I've purchased at a super discounted price thanks to my co-worker Char's SIL. Her SIL works at a local candle shop that sells all kinds of Vera merchandise. She purchases the items at a discount price from her store and when she is done with the pattern, her SIL has a cheap tag sale to make room for the new designs. Who cares if they patterns are "old" or sometimes retired, what matters to me is the discounted price! Also, they are always it great condition and still smell like the candle shop (added bonus).

Coin Purse, usually $14, purchased for $1. The round bag I couldn't find but I purchased it for Ally for $1.

Today was one of those days at work. Char and I spread everything all over her desk and I got to pick and choose what I wanted. The best thing was, everything that she was on display was under $10. I made out like a bandit! Some of the items I don't need, but its good to have a cosmetic bag hanging around for something! Also, I got a little something for Ally too!

The smaller cosmetic bag, usually $30 purchased today for $1. The larger bag usually $34, purchased today for $2.
Sometimes there are items still with the original price tags on it, so things can be bought cheap and then given as a gift with no one to know that they payed only dollars for the bag. These sales only come around about every 6 months, so its so exciting when Char announces she will be bringing in some Vera merchandise. Yeah for us!

Tote handbag, usually $46, purchased today for $5.
Some of Vera's patterns are out of control, but Char's SIL has good taste so most of the time the hardest decision is, what do I need or want!

Jeff doesn't get the whole Vera craze. Every time he see's an unusual pattern he says, it must be a Vera Bradley bag since its ugly. Most of the time he has spotted an original pattern (rather then a knock-off), but I never can agree with him. I just elbow him and say cut it out, I like it! Oh well!
Now I can't wait for the next sale to come around!

My New Toy

I finally broke into the box of my new toy I bought last weekend. Jeff bought new tools to build our shed last weekend, but while he was looking, I noticed something that would help me around the house. It would also use the same battery as Jeff's power tools that he just bought too.

Its my very own wet/dry portable Ryobi vacuum. Its called the Tuff Sucker (nice!). I know, it may not seem like much, but its a back saver! I used it this morning on our basement stairs and oh, what a huge difference. It worked well and so light weight! I usually lug the upright, Dirt Devil up each stair as I vacuum and at the same time trying to balance it while I clean. What a frustrating thing to do!

Also, it'll help when we have to vacuum out the cars! What we usually do is bring out the same Dirt Devil or dig out the our huge Wet/Dry vac out of the shed, bring out the extension cord, get the cord caught on the wheels as you go around the car and stretch real hard to get to that last corner before the extension cord unplugs. Well, we no longer will have to deal with that! We just have to connect a charged battery to the new Ryoni and off we go.

Yeah for small discoveries!

Weekend Warrior

We did it. We survived! We put together our shed today, but not before Jeff changed his mind on what we were going to put on the ground to raise it up. We were planning on laying out brick slabs and make sure they were all level first. After starting to do that and realizing how much of a pain in the behind that was, Jeff decided to build a platform (pictured on the left). It went together so much quicker then the first idea and much stronger too. That was done last night.

Then this morning rolled around. We are prepped and ready to head out into the back yard to tackle our project. It was about 9:30am.

Our shed, all over the back yard
The first step was to lay out all the pieces (the shed came in 3 enormous boxes) and make sure we had everything. After going down the inventory list, we were ready to get started with just the two of us.
The first step was to assemble the floor. We laid out all 6 pieces and the instructions said that each piece just clicked after they are pushed together. Well, when you have one person who is stronger then the other, it really doesn't work too good. Jeff would push his side and I was being pushed backwards as I tried with everything I could by digging feet in the ground trying not to move. After several attempts, it just didn't work. So, Jeff called his brother John Jr and he was able to come over and assist.
Its staring to look like something!
It took even the two guys a little effort, but they got the floor together. Jeff's brother decided to stick around and help a little while longer. So, the 3 of us were working like a well oiled machine putting it all together. The sides were the next step that they went up pretty quickly.
Jeff & John Jr making a roof
After the sides was the roof. The roof was a little more complex, but went together in no time. In our shed, we even have a sky light (that's the white plastic above Jeff's head).

Look at all that room!
After the roof, it was time to put the doors on and then all the little finishing touches. There was these little plastic whole covers (134 to be exact) that had to go in all the wholes in the walls and doors (we assumed it gives the plastic room to expand in the heat). But after that task, it was all done. It felt great to have built something from scratch! We were done a little before 1pm. Not bad timing if I say so myself!

The final project! It looks like the picture too!
There wasn't any real fighting going on while putting it together. A swear hear and there, a smart remark, but noting to earth shattering. Everyone was warning us that we would kill each other while we were putting the shed together, but John Jr and I let Jeff take the rains of the project and it all worked out. Thanks again to John Jr for coming out to help! Now, we just have to fill it!

Tax Free Weekend...Yeah!

This past weekend was MA's tax-free weekend. Usually us Bay-Staters pay 5% on purchases (on top of excise-tax, smokers pay a HUGE tax, all kinds of home related taxes and what ever else tax-achussetts government decides they want to tax). It may not add up to hundreds of dollars on saving for large items, but every dollar saved is a dollar in my pocket!

Our tax savings terms were for this year:

"The Act provides that the sales tax holiday will occur on August 16 and 17, 2008 and on those days, non-business sales at retail of single items of tangible personal property costing $2,500 or less are exempt from sales and use taxes, subject to certain exclusions. The following do not qualify for the sales tax holiday exemption and remain subject to tax: all motor vehicles, motorboats, meals, telecommunications services, gas, steam, electricity, tobacco products and any single item whose price is in excess of $2,500."

When we found out it was tax-free weekend, one thing popped in my mind.....a new shed! I've been scooping out shed's at the home depot since spring, but haven't really convinced myself on getting one, until now. We have one in our yard, but its getting really cramped with all kinds of yard tools, car parts/tools, bikes, and anything else that was stored in there that we cannot find.

What the shed looks like now
We bought one to assemble (next weekend) and its mostly out of heavy duty plastic with a metal frame. We also purchased some patio stone slabs to put underneath it so it has something other the the ground to rest on. The floor of the shed is tough plastic too. I'll share our purchasing and prep photos on my wordless Wednesday this week.

What the shed SHOULD look like next weekend
Then we decided to buy Zack his school supplies. He was with us for the weekend, so it was a great time for us to head to Staples and let him pick the stuff out instead of us guessing on what he would like.
Yeah, we had to convince him that he doesn't need 6 book socks (what ever happened to the old paper bag covers anyway) and 2 packs of 5 highlights (I let him get the fanciest out of the two) and that he doesn't need dozens of pens. Other then those little challenges, it was fun to see him pick out what he needs to store inside his desk. He's going to be one prepared 5th grader!

I {heart} staples!
After school shopping, there was one more big purchase pending and my mom & I decided to take care of it this afternoon (after Zack left). My cousin has a baby-shower coming up in a few weeks and it was good timing for the tax-free weekend so we could save some dough on shopping for her. We ended up purchasing a bundle of cute things off of her registry (I'll share a picture when its all put together).
I say the hardest things was to figure out what to buy for her. But we definitely hooked them up! We decided on a cloth hamper and its going to be filled with diapers, wipes, some of the crib sheets, swaddle blankets, books, Tigger bathrobe and booties and a bath toy.

Isn't this the cutest thing ever?
I don't know the exact amount we saved, but on the shed and stones alone we saved over $40. I say if we saved over $50, its a great deal! I can't wait until next year!

My Backyard

I haven't gotten a chance to report on our vegetable garden this year. The tomato plants have been in the ground since mid-May, but they are really coming along. We have 6 plants (which we bought already started for us) and they are getting taller. I'm so excited.

I can't wait to have fresh tomato's from the garden. We already have some flowers on the plants which is a good sign. Quick story-my FIL went out an bought our plants without me this year since we were at my cousins wedding in May and he couldn't wait for me any longer. So, the night of the wedding he lets me know he bought the plants and he had set them out in the garden where he would like us to plant them. Great! Then his next sentence was to inform me he bought the plants from Ocean State (which is a discounted store for rejected items from other stores) and he really isn't sure they are actually tomato plants. Oh geez! I said hopefully soon they will be showing signs that they are indeed tomato plants and finally they are! Phew!

We also are trying cucumbers from seedlings this year. Hopefully they will turn out better then my carrots from last year (OK Sarah, stop laughing). I have to report that my carrots did not grow any longer then 2 inches long, but they were fat so at least I has something! The first carrot I picked (early so I can check the progress) was so small and petite that my niece thought it was for her toy bunny. Nice, huh? So, we'll see if cucumbers work better for us this year!

Now onto my strange phenomenon near my swing in the back yard. I notice an occurrence of mushrooms popping up every time it rains. The next day after a heavy rain, I have dozens of mushrooms mixed in with my mulch! I have no idea why! I pluck them from the ground, then they keep coming back in different locations.

I have a weed/grass blocking material separating the dirt and the mulch to help stop sprouting so the only thing I can think of is either some kind of bacteria is on the material or its the mulch I bought. Any suggestions why? Or something to make them stop growing?!?

We've never had a mushroom growth like that in our yard (well, at least since I've been here for the last 6 years). Last year when we set the swing up, laid the weed/grass blocker and the mulch, this never happened. Its just very odd to me that its only in this area of the yard. I go out there every time and pick them, and they just keep coming back.

Goin' to see my BFF!

We are leaving on a Jet Plane (Southwest Airlines to be exact) tomorrow afternoon to see my grandpa! It was suppost to be a Zack weekend in MD, but we all know how that turned out (with the old switch-a-roo to memorial day weekend). It would've broken grandpa's heart if we didn't go because of the swap, and I can't handle that. So Jeff and I are taken off to good ol'Beltsville MD. We are busten out of work early and heading to the airport.

This weekend is all about grandpa. We do what ever he wants to do....if he wants to walk around Walmart, we do.....if he wants to people watch at the mall, so do we......if he wants to sit at home on the front stoop and talk, well, so will we! You get the idea.

I've been visiting him on this combo weekend for over 10 years now and I'm not about to stop. Besides, I wouldn't hear the end of it. Grandpa may be turning 82 years old on Monday, but don't mess with his routines. No sir!

I will share our visit when we return, but until then........have a great weekend!

Feel The Burn

I know the title for today's entry sounds like something from a bad aerobics work out video from the 80's, but I promise its nothing like that. Its the first thing that popped in my head the other day when my FIL asked me "do you want to take the bikes out?". What he means by the bikes are our kick-ass mountain bikes. Ok, ok, I know mine is a hand-me down from my work (there was a raffle and I won) and my FIL's bike is a little old, but who cares. They still get the job done for us!

At first John just wanted to go around the block. We rode out of our driveway and started to head down the street and all of a sudden I hear, naaaaa lets go to the reservoir. Yeah! We both ran inside to change into our official bike riding clothes. Then he placed the bikes onto his neat-o rack on his truck and then we were off. You might be asking, where is your husband? Well, he was home trying to make it to the next level on Call of Duty.

Our bikes on the neat-o rack

Anyways, we arrived at the reservoir and the entrance way was lined with cars. I guess everyone else had the same idea, either to walk or ride in this beautiful area. In no time the bikes were on the ground and we were riding on the pathway around the water.

Entrance into the Reservoir

I didn't realize how much I missed being in that area. The sights, smells and peacefulness. Its hard to describe the smells that had awaken my senses right then and there while riding, but its a mix of pine, dirt and the woods. Those scents mixed together just mean happiness for me. It must be why I love the outdoors so much.

Half-Way Point View Around Reservoir

Ok, back on subject, we "felt the burn" in our muscles on the first incline around the reservoir. Yeah it wasn't long into our ride that we had, but we were out there having fun and getting exercise (no pain, no gain...huh?). We really enjoyed our ride watching the families walking or biking, spotting the wildlife (turtles, baby geese, a hawk and chipmunks). I hope we can fit another ride in this weekend, even if its just once around like the other day. Oh how I love the warm weather!

Treasure Hunting

After breakfast this morning, it was agreed that my FIL, John, and I would go to the local flea market to walk around and look through all the "junk" (while my husband stayed behind to play his video game). That's what my FIL calls everything there, and most of it is, but you never know what you will find while sifting through the piles.

It was a beautiful morning, partly cloudy but still sunny with a breeze, to take a ride into the country and head to the flea market. We had nothing in particular we were looking for, but we had realized we hadn't been to the marked in well over a year so we were over due.

I told John I brought my camera to take pictures for my blog and as soon as I mentioned that, we were driving by a farm. He said I should take a picture of the cows and put it on it. I told him people have seen cows before, but just to humor him I did and here are the lucky cows. As soon as we pulled over and I snapped the picture, one of the cows started to run over to the fence. I felt bad we had to leave (and we had nothing to feed it) but it seemed like the cow was excited to have visitors.

This flea marked has been around for years. Its also humongous in size. There are items ranging from bootlegged movies to antiques to flowers/vegetables for your garden. The booths line up for a couple of miles and everyone is looking for something different. There were a lot of people there walking around with there bags filled with treasures. I can't tell you what I found since its going to be a gift for my parents anniversary (in July). So, you'll have to wait until then to see what I had found. Sorry dad, no hints!

John was looking for a screwdriver he could use a work (a long screwdriver with a sturdy handle he can bang things into place with and no worry about it breaking). He says he has brand new ones in his toolbox, but he doesn't want to ruin it. Ok, I said what ever works for you! So, he found one for a buck and he was so excited.

We were happy we decided to go this morning! It was a wonderful ride and a good time had by all. I'm sure we will be going again soon.

What a glorious weekend!

This weekend's weather was perfect! It was so beautiful. On Saturday the temperature was in the 80's with a nice breeze cooling you off if you happen to get a little warm standing in the sun. Those are the type of days I long for. Yesterday was a little cooler, in the 70's, but it was still a lovely day to be outside.

Since it was so nice, it was time to tackle some yard work. I didn't want to over do it, but I needed to start somewhere. So, this past weekend I focused on the backyard. I usually work on the front first, but my backyard swing was calling my name. I mean, I couldn't neglect it any longer. I couldn't wait to clean it up to get out there to catch up on some reading.

The first thing I had to do was remove all of these huge branches that broke off our trees from the snow this winter. My FIL thought it was a smart idea to throw them in the corner where my swing is located for the time being. Well, let me tell you it was a pain to pull them off of each other to an area where we can chainsaw them into pieces.

Here is a picture below of the piles of branches, but I should have taken a picture before since it really doesn't show the effect of huge branches. Oh, well.

Then, I had to do some racking & clean up of the mulch from last year. I had little piles to pick up, no problem.

Then, here is the almost final picture. I just have to lay down new mulch to finish it all up. That is a project for this weekend coming up. I will have a little helper next Saturday, so I'm sure she will like helping her auntie spread some mulch.

After supper last night, I was able to go and relax on my swing and read the Sunday paper. Oh, how I enjoyed myself last night just swinging away, reading the news and listening to the birds sing away. At least I wasn't the only one enjoying myself!

I also trimmed some of the those annoying yellow flower bushes that we have in our back corner that is in the back of our garden area. I wanted to get to it before the flowers really bloomed. Those branches take away a lot of the sun from our veggies and I didn't want it to happen again. So, I worked on that too along with the swing area. I can't wait to plant my garden.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for........

Ice Cream! I am so excited! We have a soft serve ice cream shop at the end of our street and it opened for the season yesterday. Oh, I was so happy!

The opening of "Mr Cone" means summer is around the corner. Also, it means I have easy access to many flavors of soft serve & hard ice cream. Its a summer time weakness of mine. I try to eat Ben & Jerry's during the cold months, but its just not the same. To me, ice cream means summer.

Also, my niece knows that ice cream is at the end of our street. The other day, while she was in the car with her Grandpy, they turned the corner to approach our street and she asked if they could get ice cream. Unfortunately, that was last Friday and they weren't open yet, but I'm sure the next time she will visit, we will be walking down the street for a yummy treat!

I should have snapped a picture yesterday with the huge lines, cars parked everywhere and the picnic tables jammed packed with others just as excited over the season opener as I am. I hope I can find the time this weekend to grab a cone with raspberry & vanilla twist. MMMMMM!

What was it?

It was 5pm and ready to head out for my surprise on Saturday evening. We drove through our neighborhood, drove to the "main drag" for our town, pulled our U-Turn and drove into the parking lot of the Hu Ke Lau restaurant. I was excited, we hadn't been there for years.

My husband explained we were going for dinner and a comedy show. Oh, how fun! The Hu Ke Lau is a Polynesian restaurant and an entertainment facility for comedy/Hawaiian shows. The comedian was Christopher Titus. He was hilarious! Our food was great too (the drinks were yummy, especially the pineapple rum beverage).

I was so excited he had planned the whole night for us to go out and have fun. He mentioned he saw an ad in a local newspaper and thought we would really enjoy it. Boy was he right!

I'm just glad this surprise was able to happen since the last time he tried, the transplant was pushed up and we never made it to Canada. He was planning to whisk me away for the weekend (before the passport requirements went into effect) to Canada to see Niagara Falls since I have never been there. So, for this past weekends surprise, I'm glad there were no scheduling conflicts.

Think Spring!

Spring is coming later this month and I can't wait. I was day dreaming this weekend about my favorite things that will be happening soon because the new season will be upon us soon. Here is my top 10 favorite things to do when the weather gets warmer (they are not listed in any order):
  1. Bike Riding
  2. Plant my vegetable garden
  3. Open my outdoor swing up for the warm months
  4. Plant flowers
  5. Spreading mulch (the smell of ceder mulch is a favorite of mine too)
  6. Opening the windows in the house for fresh air
  7. Spring Cleaning (yes, I'm demented, I like to clean)
  8. Wearing fleece jackets instead of heavy winter coats
  9. Watching nature wake up from the winter hibernation
  10. Turning the heat off in the house

Photo Fun

Since my company let everyone go home early today with our latest snow storm, I had some me time this afternoon. I decided it was a great opportunity to play with my new camera! Here are a few photo's I wanted to share from around the house.
